To obtain a Concealed Handgun License in the State of Oregon:

Be 21 years of age and a resident of Oregon. The sheriff may waive the residency requirement if you are a resident of a contiguous state (California, Idaho, Nevada or Washington) and can demonstrate a legitimate need for a CHL in Oregon.

Complete an approved firearms safety or training course. Oregon does not recognize CHL's from any other state.

Fill out the application form at your local sheriff's office. Each county uses its own form; there is no standard. Submit the completed application form, two forms of identification (one must have a photo), your firearms training certificate and the permit fee. The sheriff's office will take your fingerprints and photos.

Receive your license or be denied within 45 days. If you are denied, the sheriff must give you the reason in writing.

This class will provide you with the information necessary to meet, and exceed, the basic handgun safety requirements of ORS 166.291 for obtaining an Oregon Concealed Handgun License. The focus of this course is on using a handgun for self-defense.

The course is nine hours and consists of approximately six and half hours in the classroom and two and half hours on the range. Each student will shoot 50 rounds from their defensive handgun.

NOTE: Historically this class fills up two months in advanced and usually has a waiting list.

"This BHS course beats the pants off of a 'CHL' Course I took from a Gun Shop!"

"The great reputation of OFA is very well deserved. The Staff couldn't be better or more helpful. I can't wait to return for another training. OFA is so well organized it is inconceivable that one could do a better job" ~ David Kelly

"I am an NRA Instructor for Basic Pistol at a local range and I wish we could do half as good as you guys!." ~ L. Lake

My wife and I just completed the Basic Handgun Safety Course today and the few minutes we took to add our thoughts to your questionnaire seem very small in light of the experience we had, considering we talked about it the entire 1-1/2 hour drive home.

I have learned more in this Basic Handgun Safety course and your Defensive Handgun 1 than in the last 2 years of shooting IDPA & IPSC & everything else including video tapes, books and learning from my friends...thanks!...Excellent courses!" Mike B.

My wife and I both agree that every penny that class cost us was money well spent. You may be a bit pricier than other classes, and the drive time to be there at 7:30 was a slight inconvenience, but we were rewarded with such friendly folks, teaching but doing it with some personality, and going so deep into it, that we’ll be back. I personally was astounded to find that much of what I had learned in the past was added to in ways that I will carry with me forever (and some of what I had learned was ‘Bogus Crap!). Pointing and shooting is easy, doing it correctly will take the training you give. My wife, my boys, and myself shoot regularly. From now on it will be done with a higher level of safety and competence.

"Fun Course! Worth every dime!"

"I have previous Military training and I still learned many new things...
I will definitely return for more training. Thank you!"

The Academy’s knowledge and competency was, beyond question, the best I have ever experienced in any class and on any shooting range. Going in I knew that this class was the beginning of our training as armed citizens. I can say now that each successive class we take to reaching our potential will be taught at OFA. We both look forward to the Defensive Handgun 1 class. We both hope to go further!

Many THANKS again!! You folks are awesome and I will recommend you to anyone I talk to in the future.

You are free to cut, copy, paste, splice, fold, spindle, or mutilate this mail into any form that will help you in advertising on the web or in hard print. Any way you cut it, you folks are the best out there.

"First comment: WOW! I learned a lot today - the legal instruction was topnotch, as was the self-defense, safety, ammunition, cleaning & care of handguns, & range instructions. I would highly recommend this course to anyone who is interested in basic handgun safety. PS Thank you for the candy, the delicious coffee, and the lovely rest room facilities."
~ Ann O.

"Best course of its kind . . .I've attended a similar class in the area and it doesn't even come close to this one! Your course is much more through, with highly knowledgeable and skilled instructors. I should have come to your class first!"

"I appreciate the respect shown to every participant, regardless of ability. This is my second class on basic handgun, once with another instructor at a different class, and after taking this course I can't believe how much safety information was excluded with my first class (at the other school). Thanks for an excellent class! I will definitely be back from more!
~ Margo C.

"Great instruction, professional, fantastic hands-on with some great positive reinforcement."

"This was a wonderful beginning class, thank you for taking the extra time and effort to help me through the range practice"

"After years of shooting wrong, I am now attempting to change my ways. Thanks for a fun day. Well worth getting up at 3:45 a.m."
NOTE: Student & her spouse drove over three hours to attend this course.

"The knowledge I learned in class gave me the knowledge to know that if I had to, I could defend me and my family."
