Defensive Shotgun Course
This is the same course used to train law enforcement officers

$150 per person
8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Skill Level: Basic to Intermediate
Prerequisite: Basic Handgun Safety is required and Defensive Handgun 1 or Armed Security Course is strongly suggested (as we will train with handguns in addition to the shotgun)

The shotgun is an awesome ally in a self-defense situation. No one argues about its psychological and terminal effectiveness. But, do you have the skills, knowledge & attitude to effectively employ one in a lethal force crisis? OK, so you can shoot clay pigeons but can you protect your family with one? The certified instructors at Oregon Firearms Academy's have developed an exciting eight-hour Defensive Shotgun Course that will give you the skills & knowledge you need to survive the streets and the courtroom! This course is the same course used to certify police officers with a tactical shotgun. In this course you will learn about the flexibility, versatility, and applications of the defensive shotgun.

You will learn about:

      • Various sling/carry positions and options

      • Administrative procedures - the correct process for
        loading, unloading & chamber check.

      • Shotgun readiness including the different modes: "ready," "transport" and "storage"

      • Basic tactical procedures - the shotgun ready position, combat reload, tactical reload & reducing shotgun malfunctions

      • How to transition to slugs or other specialty ammunition

      • How to safely & quickly transition to your handgun if your shotgun malfunctions

      • How to assume various positions using the shotgun - kneeling, standing, behind cover etc.

      • Shotgun patterns including the "donut effect" and "stringing"

      • How to gain more competency and accuracy to protect oneself in a self-defense scenario

Equipment Necessary for each individual attending:

      • A 20 or 12 ga. pump or autoloader shotgun with carry sling

      • NOTE: Shotguns equipped only with a pistol grip (with no butt stock) will not be allowed at the school as they are a safety hazard, plus, you cannot successfully & safely manipulate it during the course. Shotguns equipped with a combination of butt stock and pistol grip are okay.

      • 350-400 rounds of birdshot (Shot size of #9, 8, or 7 1/2 is fine and steel shot is NOT recommended)

      • 5 rounds of buckshot & 5 rounds of slugs (Standard velocity or "tactical" low velocity is okay)

      • A handgun with (2) magazines or speedloaders and 50 rounds of handgun ammunition.

      • A carrying sling attached to your shotgun (standard 1" nylon sling is perfect!)

      • Hearing protection - Ear Muffs are for sale in our Alumni Pro Shop

      • ANSI/OSHA wrap-around Safety Glasses are required - Glasses are for sale in our Alumni Pro Shop

      • Ball Cap or hat with brim/bill

      • Knee pads are suggested but not required

      • SUGGESTION: Wear pants with large pockets "BDU type" or a jacket/shirt with large pockets to hold shotshells. A special shotshell carrier is not needed but each student will need to keep at least 25 rounds on their person during the range exercises to easy facilitate reloading without having to leave the firing line to obtain more shells.

      • Lunch, beverages, and dress for shooting outdoors
